Summer in Puerto Rico

At least I didn't take three weeks to upload a new blog, you know what I mean? The most beautiful thing that Puerto Rico has are the beaches. But other than going to the beach this summer, there are so many things to do around the island. There will be directions to each of the places. I'll name a few:

    • El Yunque (Rio Grande)
      • This is Puerto Rico's tropical rainforest. You can do so many things from going on a hike to taking a dip in the natural waterfalls (try going to La Mina falls). Be sure to pack a good amount of water and snacks because some trails take hours to get to where you want to go. I recommend you stay on route and not go exploring (that is if you don't want to get lost) and go with a big group of friends. Find a good spot and take loads of pictures. El Yunque comes to life at night when you can hear all the different kinds of animals, especially our native coqui.

    • El Morro (San Juan)
      • It's located in San Juan, the capital of Puerto Rico. Known for its architecture and historical background, El Morro is full of many things to do. If you sign up for a tour, you'll get a good look at the islands history and how it came to be. It's also a great spot to picnic and have a family day flying kites. Grab a "parcha" ice cream or a "piragua" and enjoy the fresh breeze.

    • Gilligan's Island (Guánica)
      • This is one of my favorite places to be. I will make another post about the city of Guánica and why it is my favorite. Gilligan's Island is known for the "mangles" (mangroves) and the way the water can take you around the little island in no time. Grab a floaty and a cold drink and just relax as the water drifts you away. Another fun thing to do is to jump off the mangroves, be sure to be careful when you jump. It's also a great place to go with family or close friends.

    • Flamenco Beach (Culebra)
      • My friends love this beach and I honestly think that once you've been here you may want to go back almost every summer. It's such a fun and relaxing place to be. Whether you want to go with your honey, hang out with friends or have a family vacation, Flamenco Beach has it all. There are hotels nearby and even camping areas; don't worry there are showers available. You won't get bored here, since there are a lot of activities to do. If you want to get a view of the underwater life, you can snorkel, there's also a volleyball net. Please remember to put on some sunblock, you can get easily tanned here.

    • Sun Bay (Vieques)
      • Another one of my favorite beaches in Puerto Rico. If you ever get a chance to visit this beautiful little island, which by the way is full of surprises, I recommend you visit this beach. You'll fall in love with how clear the water is and how white the sand can be. It's the perfect place to get a beautiful tan and relax. I almost forgot to mention, it's a great place to watch the sunset!

    • Cueva las Golondrinas (Manatí)
      • This is a beautiful cave. It got its name thanks to some little birds called "Golondrinas" who took refuge in it. Located in a spot in "La Poza de las Mujeres" in Manatí. It's great for snorkeling but you may not find much, depends on the season.

    • La Cueva del Indio (Arecibo)
      • I visited this place with my family and we learned so much about our culture. When you go down to see what's in the cave you'll find encrypted symbols that our ancestors (the Tainos) drew. If you look up the cave you'll see it takes a shape of a heart. Also, if you take a walk up to the peaks, you'll find a path that leads to a beach. Be careful not to fall up there.

    • Zipline at Toro Verde (Orocovis)
      • For my fellow adrenaline junkies, this is one is for you. We have the longest zipline in the universe. If you want to get over your fear of heights this is it. You want to be a pretty cotorra? Go ahead and visit Toro verde.

    • Bioluminescent Mosquito Bay Kayaking (Vieques)
      • I didn't like the pictures that I saw online, that's the reason why there's no picture, I apologize. It's beautiful in the day but gorgeous at night. As you ride the kayak be sure to move your hand in the water so you can see it sparkle up. I won't say much about it, I don't want to spoil the moment for you. I recommend you visit it if you're on vacation or even if you're a local. It's a great experience and you might learn something about the diversity that Puerto Rico has.

    • Rio Blanco (Naguabo)
      • This is where "El Salto de Hippie" is located. It's a great place to be with friends. You can climb up rocks and jump on to an amazing natural pool. The water is pretty blue and you can see things clearly. It's better to go in the summer, the water tends to get a bit cold when the winter breezes hit the island.

    • TRY OUR FOOD!
      • You can not leave Puerto Rico without going to Loiza and trying our "alcapurrias". Also, try the "mondongo" (the best place that makes these are the ones throughout the island). If you like desert try our "tembleque" and "arroz con dulce", these are popular in the winter season. The best drinks are the piña colada, "pitorro" and "coquito".

*QUICK DISCLAIMER! PLEASE, WHEN YOU VISIT THESE PLACES BE SURE TO CLEAN UP AFTER YOUSELF LEAVE AND LEAVE THINGS BETTER THAN YOU FOUND THEM!!*
